Mission and Identity

University Town Library of Shenzhen (Shenzhen Science & Technology Library) serves as a central knowledge hub for Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, and Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), while also remaining fully open to the public. It is the first library in China to integrate the functions of both an academic and a public library. Guided by the mission “All for human development, for the development of all,” the library is a new-generation library—professional, research-oriented, digital, and fully accessible—serving university scholars, enterprises, researchers, and the broader Shenzhen community.

Library Building

Nestled at the heart of University Town, the library conveys a quiet strength and refined elegance, echoing the spirit of a “crouching tiger, hidden dragon.” Its architecture and interiors blend harmoniously to foster a space that uplifts minds and welcomes all. Neutral grey and white surfaces create a tranquil backdrop, enlivened by vivid orange highlights that infuse the space with energy and warmth.

With its open layout, consistent floor heights, column spacing, and structural capacity, the library offers both comfort for current use and flexibility for future growth. It is a place where students, researchers, and community members can read, reflect, and explore knowledge in an atmosphere that is peaceful, spacious, and full of quiet energy.

Collection Development

The library builds its collection based on a balanced approach between physical and virtual holdings, as well as print and digital resources. It is the most resource-rich library in Shenzhen in terms of electronic materials. Emphasis is placed on acquiring scientific, foreign-language, and electronic resources. A comprehensive system of literature resources has been established, focusing on electronic information, chemical biology, materials science, logistics engineering and management, urban studies and environment, and advanced manufacturing. The library maintains cooperative and resource-sharing relationships with major libraries both domestically and internationally. In addition to books, journals, and newspapers, the collection also includes patents, standards, conference proceedings, scientific reports, yearbooks, business directories, industry reports, financial data, and preprints.

Scientific Literature and Information Services

The library upholds the principle of public welfare by providing free, equitable, and open services to all users. It is officially recognized as a Science and Technology Novelty Search Workstation authorized by the Ministry of Education, the NSTL (National Science and Technology Library) Shenzhen Service Hub, and a National Intellectual Property Information Public Service Point. While continuing to offer traditional library services including document lending, video-on-demand (VOD), and academic exchange programs, the library has significantly strengthened its information intelligence and enterprise service capabilities. These enhanced services encompass document delivery, citation analysis and indexing, scientific novelty search, patent retrieval and consultation, thematic intelligence research, customized information alerts, competitive intelligence consulting, and information literacy training programs for users.
